"These days we need to pay attention to every aspect of our health. It means taking a 'body, mind and spirit' approach to our overall well-being."

Dr. Ross Walker
Ambassador for AudioClinic

The word 'holistic' is being used these days when talking health. It comes from the Greek word 'holism' meaning that a system as a whole determines the condition of the individual parts.

Our sense of smell, taste and vision all involve chemical reactions, but hearing is based solely on physical movements. They pick up sound and translate it to our brain in a completely mechanical process. Our ears are complex mechanisms that need to be checked regularly.

Health professionals agree that the four cornerstones of good health and well-being are:

1. Healthy eating

Healthy eating with nutritious foods like lean protein, and lots of fruits and vegetables. Also whole grain breads and cereals instead of over-processed products high in sugar and salt.

2. Moderate exercise

Do what you enjoy, a regular walk, a bike ride, a hit of tennis, or a round of golf. Aim for 30 minutes of exercise 3-4 times a week and you will really feel the benefit.

3. Stimulating hobbies and interests

Don't just sit in front of the TV. Join a community group, or an arts or historical society. Try something you've never done before - take a cooking course, learn to play a musical instrument, join the local library, write a family history, even playing a board game like Scrabble regularly is a great way to keep your mind active and healthy.

4. Regular health checks

It's very important to continually monitor your health. Don't put these important check-ups off! It makes sense to keep track of: blood sugar, blood pressure, cholesterol, eye health, and of course hearing health.

Make all of these things part of your holistic approach to maintaining good health.
